The Lonely Doll, Dare Wright, (Houghton Mifflin Company, 1985)

I did not read this as child, but I would have loved to pore over these poignant images. Hooray for reprints!

I think this is a challenging book for modern readers. It documents the complexity of relationships in an empathic and engaging way. This book makes me wonder about the life of its author.

You can find a family friend’s loving recollections, and more of Dare’s touching photography here: Dare Wright

Kate Kellaway, writer for the Observer nominated this book as one of her 10 favourite illustrated children’s books, you can find out what the others were here: The 10 best illustrated children’s books

Would you read a book containing images of corporal punishment to your child?

What’s in your Top 10?

When I was a kid corporal punishment was nearly universal No would bat an eye at it. Now it is properly frowned upon. I guess I might think twice about it and judge according to the context and the author’s message and intentions in including it. Hard to avoid on computer and in books etc. What do you think?

Good info onDare and Kellaway. It would be interesting for example to see if Sarah for example follows the links.

Again another interesting question Trish… have gone through a bit of a similar thing with Rom when I have edited out deaths (e.g. the giant at the end of Jack and The Beanstalk) or tried to sugarcoat things a bit in Hansel and Gretel (which was pretty much impossible considering all the nasty parts of that story) Anyway Rom always seems to know when something is amiss and just wants it straight…there is always the ‘well, that was the olden days’ explanation.
P.s. Yes I did Keith (before I saw your comment too! – so many more things to add to my Amazon wish list)
